The Launch of a Year-long Campaign
Each year on 10 December the world remembers the extraordinary adoption by the UN General Assembly in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The power and relevance of the recognition enshrined in the Declaration — that all human beings have fundamental rights and freedoms — remains undiminished. In 1950, the Assembly declared 10 December as Human Rights Day, to be observed annually.
On Human Rights Day 2007, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will launch a year-long advocacy campaign, inviting people everywhere to learn more about human rights and to improve their understanding of the relevance of the Declaration in their lives. The campaign’s theme, “Dignity and justice for all of us”, expresses the universality of the Declaration and its recognition that the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of each individual are the foundation of freedom and peace. The campaign will culminate in the celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights in 2008.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights is the global authority on human rights. Headquartered in Geneva, it supports the work of all UN human rights bodies, such as the Human Rights Council, established in 2006.
Below are UN Chronicle articles, as well as educational links, that are particularly relevant to human rights. The theme of Issue 3, 2007 is racism and racial discrimination — explored in more than 25 articles from a range of perspectives.
