International Women's Day is celebrated every year on 8 March.
The 51st Session of the Commission on the Status of Women,
dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of
women, is taking place at UN Headquarters from 26 February
to 9 March 2007.
Since the UN Charter was signed on 26 June 1945, women's
rights have been at the centre of the United Nations agenda.
The preamble to the Charter addresses the need to "reaffirm
faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth
of the human person", and "in the equal rights of
men and women
".
The UN Chronicle regularly features United Nations
efforts in the advancement of women in a number of areas,
such as education, health, domestic violence and women in
leadership roles. Below are the links to UN Chronicle
articles on women's rights, as well as links to related UN
websites.
