The United Nations on Wednesday, 7 April 2004, held a panel discussion on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Rwanda genocide—“A Decade After Rwanda: The United Nations and the Responsibility to Protect”—chaired by UN Deputy Secretary-General Louise Fréchette.
The panel members included:
- Gen. Henry Kwami Anyidoho, former Deputy Force Commander, UNAMIR
- Lloyd Axworthy, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada
- Bacre Waly Ndiaye, Director, New York Office, UNHCHR
- Samantha Power, Harvard University, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide”
- Mohamed Sahnoun, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan invited delegates, staff, and members of civil society and the media affiliated with the United Nations to attend the event, which took place from 1 to 3 pm in the ECOSOC Chamber at UN Headquarters in New York. After opening remarks, there were brief presentations by the panel members, followed by a question-and-answer session.
