United Nations Day, 24 October, marks the founding of the United Nations as an instrument of peace, human rights and development fifty-nine years ago.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan, says that "we all need an effective United Nations &151; one that reflects the world we live in today, and can meet the challenges we will face tomorrow." He will soon be putting before world leaders a package of measures to renew the world Organization.
