UN Chronicle E-Alert                                                                               2004, No. 13
World Food Day, celebrated annually on 16 October, will focus this year on “Biodiversity for Food Security", highlighting the importance of biodiversity in ensuring sustainable access to high-quality food. A rich variety of cultivated plants and domesticated animals are the foundation for agricultural biodiversity. Rather than a single crop variety that guarantees a high yield, farmers in developing countries will need an assortment of crops that grow well in harsh climates or animals with resistance to disease.
