The theme for this year’s International Day of Older Persons, observed on 1 October, is “Older Persons in an Intergenerational Society”. Older persons play an important role in their families, communities and societies. As Secretary-General Kofi Annan notes, countries need to derive added value and opportunities for development through an actively engaged older population. In Madrid in 2002, the Second World Assembly on Ageing encouraged Governments to review their policies to help ensure generational equity.
A DPI/NGO briefing on "Advancing Health for Older Persons: Regional Perspectives" will be held at the United Nations on 7 October, from 10:00am to 12:30pm. For more information, please visit the DPI/NGO Section website.
