UN Chronicle E-Alert                                                                               2004, No. 6
World Environment Day (WED) 2004 will be commemorated around the world on 5 June. This year's theme is “Wanted! Seas and Oceans — Dead or Alive?” Its simple message is that we need to act now to save our marine resources, or watch as the rich diversity of life in our seas and oceans is irretrievably depleted.

Some basic facts:
  • Eighty per cent of all pollution in seas and oceans comes from land-based activities.

  • Destructive fishing practices are killing hundreds of thousands of marine species each year.

  • Pollution, exotic species and alteration of coastal habitats threaten marine ecosystems.

  • Below are links to articles pertinent to this year's theme that have appeared in past issues of the UN Chronicle.
