The European Union on 29 January honoured UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United Nations
with its Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, named after the Russian physicist and
human rights activist. The award also honoured Sergio Vieira de Mello and other UN staff killed
in the bomb attack in Baghdad on 19 August 2003.
Addressing the European Parliament in Brussels, the Secretary-General urged European leaders
to manage migration by confronting the challenge of integration. In the face of a “silent human rights crisis”
— caused by the exploitation, trafficking, and enslavement of desperate immigrants — the Secretary-General
stressed that managing migration opened new vistas for international cooperation based on the challenge
of integration.
