The United Nations is observing International Women's Day on 7 March with a conference on "Gender Equality and the Millennium Development Goals".
Distinguished speakers include UN Deputy Secretary-General Louise Frechette; Geeta Rao Gupta,Co-Chair of the Millenium Project Task Force; Emilia Fernandes, Secretary of State for the Rights of Women, Brazil; Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for HIV/AIDS in Asia Nafis Sadiq and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Sergio Vieira de Mello. Moderator will be UN Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information Shashi Tharoor.
The Observance is organized by the Department of Public Information, the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women and the Division for the Advancement of Women in cooperation with the United Nations Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality.
