Cāndido Portinari (1903—1962), Brazil's master of modernist painting, created two giant panels interpreting the objective of the United Nations Charter, "to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war". The twin murals, presented by the Brazilian Government as a gift to the United Nations in 1957, today dominate the Delegates' Lobby of the General Assembly building at UN Headquarters in New York.
