Although never explicitly mentioned in the United Nations Charter, peacekeeping
operations have become central to the Organization’s efforts in securing international
peace and bringing an end to conflicts.
The UN Chronicle regularly covers the work of UN
peacekeepers across the globe. A number of articles, from recounting
the birth of peacekeeping to examining the implications of the
Brahimi Report, outlines some of the major shifts in thinking
concerning the way in which the UN system approaches peace operations
and may provide the basis for understanding what directions such
