The Norwegian Nobel Committee in its centenary year awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001 to the United Nations and Secretary-General Kofi Annan, in recognition of the fact that “the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations”.

Traditionally held at the beginning of the session, the high-level debate was postponed due to the terrorist attacks of 11 September.
