Every year schools around the world collaborate on interesting projects through the Internet. Some of the most interesting projects are sponsored by iEARN (International Education and Resource Network), a non-profit organization made up of over 15,000 schools in 100 countries. iEARN provides teachers and students the opportunity to work together online using the Internet and other new communications technologies. We asked them to gives us a short description of some water-related projects that are going on right now around the world. Here are a couple examples:

New York City students "Hike and Test The World"

Each month, high school students from New York City area get into a bus, train or van to take a "Hike and Test the World" environmental trip around the metropolitan area. Coordinated with similar hikes in other countries, the purpose of the trip is to examine the quality of the fresh water in streams and lakes within two hours of the city. This project is a collaboration between iEARN and the American Museum of Natural History, and often involves overnight camping, as well as exploring other aspects of the local environmental situation. Following each hike, student post their results online so that they can be compared with the results found by students in other communities and countries. Students wishing to join the 2003-2004 "Hike and Test the World" project should contact wileyda@us.iearn.org.

YouthCaN

YouthCaN is a youth run organization that uses technology to inspire, connect and educate people worldwide about environmental issues. Through a network of conferences, activities and events youth in different countries are able to exchange ideas about the environment and empower others to make a difference in their own communities.

Every spring, YouthCaN welcomes over 1,000 environmental students and educators from around the world to present and participate in educational workshops and activities at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, USA. Here is one ongoing project that was presented at this year's YouthCaN:

Cities Near the Sea is a collaborative project between two wonderful cities near the sea - St. Petersburg, Russia, and Amsterdam, Netherlands. The project explores culture, history, nature and environmental problems of cities near the sea. At YouthCaN, students presented a video-conference about the environmental problems of the Baltic Sea. Additional schools in cities by seas/oceans are welcome to join this project.
