The United Nations Charter

The main purpose of the United Nations is to stop countries preparing for and fighting wars, but it is not easy. The United Nations does not want countries to fight or people to suffer. In March 1995, there were 185 countries which were members of the United Nations. They have a set of rules called the Charter which everyone can understand and which makes working together easier.		The Flags of all Member States fly in front of the UN building in New York City.
When a country joins the United Nations it has to agree to obey the following rules: All Member States are equal All Member States must obey the Charter Countries must try to settle their differences by peaceful means Countries must avoid using force or threatening to use force The United Nations may not interfere with the domestic affairs of any country Countries should try to assist the United Nations.The aims of the United Nations To keep peace throughout the world To develop friendly relations between nations To work together to help poor people live better lives, to remove poverty, disease and illiteracy in the world, to stop environmental destruction and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms Activity: Ask the children to study the UN rules. What do those rules mean to behaviour at school? Rewrite them as school rules. Who and what do these protect? What kinds of responsibilities go along with them?
