For hundreds of years people have thought about how wars between nations could be avoided by getting them to talk over their differences and settle them that way rather than by fighting. Many schemes for doing this have been suggested, particularly following wars which have caused great casualties and suffering.Soon after the end of the Second World War (1939-45), the United Nations was set up as an organization for maintaining peace. 51 states signed its Charter. By 24 October 1945, these governments had confirmed their commitment to the world organization and on that day the United Nations came into existence. This day is now celebrated each year throughout the world as United Nations Day. |
