UNSCOM at work in Iraq

On April 3, 1991, the Security Council adopted a nine-part resolution which called for a formal cease-fire after the Gulf conflict provided that Iraq agreed to all the terms and conditions of the resolutions. Under the terms of resolution 687 (1991), Iraq was required to cooperate in UN-supervised identification and destruction of its nuclear, biological and chemical capabilities. To oversee this work, the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) was established.
