One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive
body of human rights legislation. It is the United Nations which, for the first time in
history, has created a universal code of human rights, one to which all nations can
subscribe and to which all people can aspire.
December 10, 1997 marks the beginning of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the
adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 .
The United Nations Photos Website presents a selection of photos from its archives, and
will continue to add photos pertaining to human rights and human rights issues throughout
the 50th anniversary year.
