Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General

PROCEDURE FOR SCHEDULING PRESS CONFERENCES

All requests for press conferences must be made in writing, on official letterhead, and delivered or faxed to the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General (OSSG) (Room S-378, fax 963-7055) a few days before the requested date.

Upon requesting a press conference, notify the OSSG of the name(s) of speaker(s) and subject matter, and this information will be included in its written and oral announcements to the press. Please be aware that the time slot requested may not be available, in which case an alternative time would have to be arranged.

If a mission wishes to sponsor a press conference, a representative from the Mission must be present to chair it. The Department of Public Information only chairs press conferences given by Heads of State or Government or, if requested, for senior UN officials.

Press conferences must last no longer than one half-hour. Press conferences given by Heads of State or Government must last no longer than forty-five minutes. Interpretation in official languages is provided for Heads of State or Government only; two booths are available for simultaneous interpretation in two languages. If a delegation wishes to provide consecutive interpretation, the interpreter should sit next to the main speaker on the podium. OSSG also arranges TV, audio, photo and press coverage of the event.

Attendance at press conferences is limited to accredited journalists. The only exceptions are the press attache and other officials of the same delegation directly concerned with the press conference, as well as UN officials covering the press conference.

Press conferences are held in Room S-226. The capacity of this room is 84 persons seated. If another venue is desired, then the press conference can be held in one of the conference rooms, subject to availability.

Press conferences by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) must be sponsored by a UN office/agency or by missions to the United Nations.
