Additional Infrastructure and Consumables Requirements: Darfur Emergency
(estimated as of 21 June 2004 )

The following represents an indicative list of urgently required humanitarian emergency response items. Some of these items are also requested (as cash) in the current Sudan appeal, and are listed due to severe capacity constraints, and/or difficulties in accessing items through usual channels.

Donors are requested to consider all possible channels to locate the items listed below, given the urgency of the situation. Provisions of military equipment and personnel can be discussed either with the Humanitarian Coordinator, or with OCHA Headquarters. Additional technical specifications for the required items can be provided by OCHA, or the relevant UN agency.

Water and Sanitation

•  25 Truck tanker fleet – either second hand (in kind) or provided with crews

•  6 Drilling rigs inclusive of teams

•  30-40 water engineers, with support

•  Up to 40 camp tank and water distribution kits (as per UNICEF/OXFAM specifications).

•  100 Bladders (10,000/15,000 lt. Capacity)

Non Food Items

Either cash required to purchase and ship items or provided CIF Darfur.

•  100,000 blankets

•  50,000 plastic sheets (4x5m)

•  1,000 MT Soap bars

•  110,000 Jerrycans (10l-20l)

•  225,000 Cooking pots

•  215,000 Mosquito nets, permethrin treated, international standard

•  55,000 Buckets with lid (20l)

•  180,000 plastic sleeping mats

•  Rope 2,250,000 metres

•  Sanitary material (‘red flannel') 1,370,000m. (for specifications, please contact UNHCR)

•  Clothing (‘zentingi/wraps') 230,000 pcs

•  80,000 fuel efficient kerosene stoves (for specifications, please contact UN Joint Logistics Centre, Khartoum )

•  Cash to purchase 4.6 million litres kerosene, approx. $2 million

Nutrition

•  15 additional Therapeutic Feeding Centers (inclusive staff and food)

•  15 additional Selective Feeding Programs/Centers

Health

•  60 Mobile field clinics (primary health care)

•  2-3 Field Hospitals (only under condition of being located in existing GoS health facilities, and having a capacity building role as well as providing emergency treatment)

Operations

•  Container/ pre-fab. housing facilities, fully managed, for up to 50 people each, in Nyala, Geneina and Al Fasher

•  20 Container/ pre-fab. housing facilities, fully managed, for up to 20 people each for satellite offices in rural areas.

•  6 mobile VSAT satellite communications kits, inclusive with microwave transmitters to allow for in-town sharing of facilities.

•  120 6x6 short haul trucks, inclusive service capacity

•  3 Mi8 type helicopters (or equivalent) with cargo and passenger facility.

•  Funding for UN Humanitarian Air Service (to be advised shortly)

•  50 4x4 vehicles (UN Specifications), including VHF/HF communications pre-installed, provided in Nyala / El Fasher

•  3 x Logistics / vehicle maintenance support facilities, self suppr

•  Airport logistics support including 9 x heavy forklift.

•  70 x Rubbhall temporary storage units (10 X 32 m)
