Biographical Note


New Permanent Representative of Bahamas Presents Credentials

The new Permanent Representative of the Bahamas to the United Nations, Eugene Glenwood Newry, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki‑moon on 16 April.


Since 1 January, Dr. Newry has served as Deputy Permanent Representative to his country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.  Prior to that, since September 2012, he was Special Envoy to the Prime Minister.  From 2002 to 2007, he served concurrently as Bahamas’ Ambassador to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.


A neurosurgeon by profession, Dr. Newry received a BSc with premedical requirements from the Saint Francis Xavier, Antigonish in Canada in 1963, and graduated with an MD from the Université Catholique de Louvain, in Louvain, Belgium in 1972.  Following that, he pursued postgraduate studies, with a focus on clinical and operative neurosurgery, until 1981.


Born in Nassau, Bahamas on 4 October 1935, Mr. Newry is married.
