The following Security Council press statement was issued today by Council President Agshin Mehdiyev (Azerbaijan):

The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) peacekeepers in Bunyakiri, South Kivu on 14 May, which resulted in serious injuries to at least 11 Pakistani soldiers.

The members of the Security Council expressed their sympathy to those wounded in the attacks, as well as to the Government of Pakistan.  They also reiterated their serious concern about the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the Kivus and the impact on the Congolese population.  They encouraged the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to ensure that the perpetrators of the attacks are brought to justice swiftly.

The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for MONUSCO and demanded that all parties cooperate fully with the operations of MONUSCO.
