Secretary-General Appoints Ndolamb Ngokwey of Democratic Republic of Congo
Deputy Special Representative for UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Ndolamb Ngokwey of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as his Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), where he will also serve as United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator.
He will replace Georg Charpentier, who was appointed Deputy Special Representative, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Sudan. The Secretary-General is grateful for Mr. Charpentier’s dedicated service during his tenure in Côte d’Ivoire and for his contribution to the improved coordination of the United Nations system in that country. The Secretary-General also wishes to extend his appreciation to Steven Ursino, who has been performing those functions since March 2010 on an ad interim basis.
Mr. Ngokwey brings to his new position extensive humanitarian and development experience, especially in African issues, having served with the United Nations since 1986, most recently as United Nations Resident Coordinator/United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative in Mozambique.
He has also served as Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Executive Board of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). He has also held the posts of Deputy Regional Director of UNICEF’s West and Central Africa Regional Office in Abidjan, Area Representative in Barbados, Country Representative in Guinea, Deputy Representative in Senegal and Benin, and Head of Office in Cape Verde.
Mr. Ngokwey holds a PhD in sociology and anthropology, a master’s degree in public health and a master’s in anthropology from the University of California, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the then University of Zaire.
Born in 1952, Mr. Ngokwey is married and has four children.
