SECRETARY-GENERAL CONDEMNS DEADLY ATTACKS IN SRI LANKA,

SAYS DIALOGUE ONLY WAY TO STOP FURTHER VIOLENCE

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the indiscriminate attacks in the south-east of Sri Lanka today, which left dozens of dead and injured, including children.  His deepest sympathies go out to the families of the victims.

These latest deadly attacks coincide with the expiration today of the Ceasefire Agreement.  The Secretary-General reiterates his firm belief that the only way to stop further violence in Sri Lanka is through dialogue.  He urges the parties concerned to undertake genuine efforts to achieve a peaceful negotiated solution.
