UNU/UNITAR TRAINING WORKSHOP ON ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE
TAKE PLACE, 21 - 22 MARCH
The United Nations University (UNU) and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) are organizing a workshop on “Environmental Governance: The Role of Regional Frameworks to Promote Sustainable Development” on 21 and 22 March at Headquarters in conference room 6.
The devastating catastrophe of the Asian tsunami highlights the inter-societal and unrestricted nature of environmental disasters and the critical role of international and regional cooperation in addressing such unprecedented environmental challenges.
This workshop will focus on the role of regional frameworks to promote environmental governance and sustainable development. Drawing on cases and experiences from
Africa, Asia, Europeand the Pacific, the workshop will address areas of synergy that bridge the national, regional and international levels. It will also discuss global and regional mechanisms for disaster risk-reduction and opportunities for integrated capacity development to strengthen regional environmental governance.
Speakers include: Mary Sancy, Environmental Law Programme, UNITAR; Uli Piest, Project Manager, United Nations University; Carl Bruch, Legal Officer, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP); Ana-Cristina Costea, United Nations University, Comparative Regional Integration Studies; Jessica Green, United Nations University, Institute of Advanced Studies; and Bhujangarao Dharmaji, Senior Programme Officer, World Conservation Union (IUCN).
