SECURITY COUNCIL RECOMMENDS EAST TIMOR’S ADMISSION TO UNITED NATIONS


The Security Council this afternoon recommended to the General Assembly that the Democratic Republic of East Timor be admitted to membership in the United Nations.


The Council unanimously adopted resolution 1414 (2002), following its consideration of the report of the Committee on the Admission of New Members (document S/2002/566).


The Council’s decision to recommend membership for the newly independent East Timor was reiterated in a statement read out by the Council President and Foreign Minister of Singapore, S. Jayakumar, following the adoption of the resolution.


Through the statement, to be issued as document S/PRST/2002/15, the Council also noted with great satisfaction East Timor’s solemn commitment to uphold the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter and to fulfil all the obligations contained therein.


The meeting, which began at 1:38 p.m., adjourned at 1:42 p.m.
