SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS 10 REPRESENTATIVES TO COUNCIL OF UNIVERSITY OF PEACE

In accordance with article 6 of the Charter of the University for Peace, the Secretary-General, in consultation with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has appointed 10 representatives to the new Council of the University for Peace (UPAZ).

Members of the Council, which is the governing body of the University, are appointed for a period of four years. They may be reappointed. The Council is constituted with the aim of achieving a broad academic, geographical and cultural balance.

The 10 appointed members are the following:

-- Professor Yuri Afansiev of the Russian Federation, Rector, Russian State University for the Humanities, UNESCO Chair of the Culture of Peace and Democracy, Moscow;

-- Ambassador Hisashi Owada of Japan, Adviser, World Bank;

-- Dr. Attia Innayatulla of Pakistan, President, International Planned Parenthood Federation;

-- Svere Lodgaard of Norway, Director, Norwegian Institute for International Relations, Director, Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO), member of Pugwash Council;

-- Steven Rockefeller of the United States, Professor, Middlebury College, Chairman of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund;

-- Elikia M'Bokolo of the Congo, Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), Congo; Professor, Paris Research Institute on International Relations;

-- Anaisabel Perera Flores of Guatemala, former Minister of Culture of Guatemala, Special Adviser of the Director-General of UNESCO, member Club of Rome;

-- Mohamed Sahnoun of Algeria, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General in Africa, Special Adviser to the Director-General of UNESCO for the Culture of Peace Programme;

-- Rodolfo Stavenhagen of Mexico, Professor at the Centre of Sociological Studies, El Colegio de Mexico; and

-- Maurice Strong of Canada.
