Sierra Leone (United States, 21
May 2001)
Statement by the President of the
Security Council, Ambassador James B. Cunningham, Acting U.S.
Permanent Representative to
the United Nations, at the Stake-Out, May 21, 2001
Ambassador Cunningham: The
Council heard a briefing this morning from Assistant Secretary-General Annabi
on the latest developments
in Sierra Leone and welcomed that there were some positive developments to
report,
especially the agreement on
the beginning of disarmament of RUF and CDF fighters in the Kambia district and
their movement into
disarmament and demobilization camps.
Also, that UNAMSIL was continuing its forward
deployments and long range
patrols. We regarded that as positive
and we took note of ECOWAS's continuing
efforts in the region to
promote this process.
We also, on the other hand,
noted that the RUF lacks credibility and must be held to its commitments; that
there
is still a long way to go;
that the momentum to disarm and demobilize has to be maintained; and that
UNAMSIL
needs to remain
vigilant. Council members also noted
the importance of the disarmament and demobilization
program itself and
encouraged support from the international community through donations to help
it fulfill its role.
Thank you.
