Duties and
responsibilities
Installs, maintains and repairs HF, VHF and UHF
radio equipment installed throughout the mission, including hand held radios,
base stations, mobiles, repeaters and translators, plus 2 and 6 channel digital
rural telephone links. Installs, maintains and repairs a wide range of digital
and spread spectrum microwave equipment, including associated multiplexes and
Cisco concentrators. Installs, maintains and repairs both C band and Ku band
satellite systems, including HPA’s. Modems, Up/Down Converters, PSU equipment
and a wide range of antenna dishes from 1.8 to 9.2 meters in diameter, plus
Video Conferencing equipment utilizing satellite means. Installs, maintains and
repairs a range of special office equipment such as Photocopiers, Facsimile
Machines, Shredders, Projectors and Recording Equipment. Installs, maintains
and repairs all Inmarsat and Worldphone equipment installed throughout the
mission, including CapSat, FleetSat, Inmarsat M and Mini M terminals, plus
Iridium and Thuraya Worldphone handheld terminals. Prepares ancillary equipment
necessary for HF/VHF/UHF/ Rural Telephone, Microwave, Satcom and office
equipment installation and issue, including programming, alignment, optimizing
and testing of the various systems utilizing a wide range of test equipment.
Surveys, plans and prepares the installation of remote communication sites,
including erecting towers, mounting antennas, installation of communications
shelters and associated equipment such as Power Supplies, UPS units, Voltage
Regulators, DC Converter. Carries out regular preventative maintenance of
HF/VHF/UHF, Microwave, Satcom installations as determined by the RCITC.
Completes the necessary installation and issue documentation required. Carries
out other tasks as deemed necessary by the Supervisor.
Qualifications
Education:
Completion of secondary education; supplemental courses and technical
certification in electronic telecommunications, computer technology or other
related field. Practical training
should include radio communications, voice and data communications.
Experience: A
minimum of 3 years hands-on telecommunications experience at the national or
international level in the public or private sector.
Language:
Fluency in written and spoken English; fluency in one or more official
UN languages is desirable and may be a requirement.
Other Desirable Skills: Familiarity with commercial telecommunications services;
knowledge of the UN’s voice and data communications systems.
