1999 International Year of the Older Persons

The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 47/5 of 1992 on the Proclamation on Ageing, decided to observe 1999 as the International Year of Older Persons (IYOP) with the theme “Towards a society of all ages”. The General Assembly, inter-alia, invited the Regional Commissions to bear in mind the goals of the Year in convening regional meetings in 1998 and 1999 at which to mark the Year and formulate action plans on ageing for the twenty-first century.
