Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 30 October to 5 November 1999

During the week to 5 November 1999, Iraq exported a total of 17.4 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $360 million dollars.  Since oil exports under phase VI began on 1 June there have been 347.7 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $6.440 billion.  To date, about 43 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.  

As reported earlier, the Security Council's 661 Committee has approved 80 contracts for the sale of Iraqi oil with a total volume of 389.7 million barrels (222.5m Basrah Light, 167.2m Kirkuk).

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 792 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $1.938 billion under phase VI. Of the 581 contracts circulated to the Security Council's 661 Committee, 421 worth $978 million have been approved.    So far $1.56 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under phase IV and $1.5 billion under phase V.

At present there are 334 contracts worth $738 million dollars for the purchase of humanitarian supplies on hold:  in phase IV, 17 contracts worth $31.7 million dollars are on hold; in phase, V 195 contracts worth $501.7 million and in phase VI, 122 contracts worth $204 million.

In Phases IV to VI, OIP has received contracts worth $678 million for the supply of oil industry spare parts and equipment.  The 661 Committee has approved contracts worth $247.2 million for phase IV and put $50.1 million on hold. For phase V, $140.56 million has been approved and $99.9 million is currently on hold. For Phase VI, the OIP has received $50.6 million dollars worth of contracts, $7.96 million has been approved and $10.5 million is on hold. Meanwhile supplies continues to arrive in Iraq.   Arrivals over the past week include:  94 thousand tones of wheat, 1 thousand tonnes of cooking oil, 2100 tonnes of pulses and 2900 tonnes of detergents and soaps.  Other arrivals include: medicines including vaccines, antibiotics, surgical gloves, welded pipes, heavy trucks, transformers, electrical switchgear, LPG cylinder valves and oil industry spares and equipment.
