Oil-for-Food Background Information

Update for the period 7 August to 13 August 1999

During the week to 13 August 1999, Iraq exported a total of 16.4 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $300 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 152.3 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of about $2.535 billion. To date, about 45 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

No additional contracts were submitted for the export of Iraqi oil. So far, 78 contracts were submitted and approved, for a volume of 371,1 million barrels.

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 127 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $614 million under Phase VI. To date, 16 contracts with a value of $150.8 million have been circulated to the 661 Committee.

So far $1.542 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.380 billion under Phase V. There are $55.8 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $297.5 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $243.420 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $40.9 million on hold. For Phase V, $77.056 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $83.063 million is currently on hold. Goods purchased under the programme continue to arrive normally. Arrivals over the past two weeks included: 14,680 tonnes of wheat, 8,587 tonnes of cooking oil, and smaller quantities of iodised salt, powdered infant milk formula., detergents and tea. Other arrivals included various foot and mouth disease vaccines, water pumps and broiler hatching eggs, among other items.
