Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 10 July to 23 July 1999

During the two weeks from 10 to 23 July 1999 Iraq exported a total of 31.4 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $560 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 108.4 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $1.751 billion. To date, about 46 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

The Security Council's 661 Committee approved four further contracts for the export of Iraqi oil. This brings the total contracts approved to 74 with a total volume of 350.9 million barrels (197.1m Basrah Light, 153.8m Kirkuk). Another three contracts are pending.

The Office of the Iraq Programme has begun receiving contracts for the humanitarian supplies under Phase VI. To date, 27 contracts with a total value of $238 million have been received and will be circulated to the 661 Committee shortly. So far $1.537 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.354 billion under Phase V. There are $61.5 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $290.5 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $242.5 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $38.9 million on hold. For Phase V $55.6 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $75.4 million is currently on hold. Goods purchased under the programme continued to arrive normally: Arrivals over the past two weeks included: 69,883 tonnes of wheat, 59,265 tonnes of rice, 16,144 tonnes of cooking oil and 2715 tonnes of iodized salt. Other arrivals included various pharmaceuticals, forklifts, a $15 million tugboat from China for the oil industry, a mobile X ray unit, diesel powered water pumps, chlorine gas and tomato seeds .
