Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 3 July to 9 July 1999

During the week to 9 July 1999 Iraq exported a total of 17.4 million barrels of crude oil for an estimated revenue of $287 million dollars. Since oil exports under Phase VI began on 1 June there have been 77 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $1.216 billion. To date, about 47 per cent of loadings have been made at Ceyhan.

The Security Council's 661 Committee approved one further contract for the export of Iraqi oil. This brings the total contracts approved to 70 with a total volume of 338.3 million barrels (192.3m Basrah Light, 146m Kirkuk). Another six contracts are pending.

So far $1.54 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under Phase IV and $1.313 billion under Phase V. There are $72.19 million dollars worth of humanitarian supplies on hold in Phase IV and $278.97 million on hold in Phase V.

The 661 Committee has approved $241.94 million worth of oil spare parts and equipment in Phase IV and put $37.03 million on hold. For Phase V $53.3 million in oil sector equipment has been approved and $67.59 million is currently on hold. As at 12 July, there have been full or partial deliveries of 140 contracts for the supply of oil industry spare parts and equipment. This represents one third of the contracts approved by the 661 Committee for the oil sector in Phase IV. The value of the material which has arrived is $44.4 million dollars.

Goods purchased under the programme continued to arrive normally. During last week 94 trucks carrying humanitarian supplies crossed into Iraq at Zakho, 290 at Trebil and 313 at Al Waleed. Nine ships began unloading cargoes at the port of Umm Qasr. Arrivals included: 12,000 tonnes of sugar, 2500 tonnes of cooking oil and 4600 tonnes of detergents and soap. Other arrivals included various pharmaceuticals, broiler hatching eggs and broiler protein concentrate, schools desks, generating sets, a drilling rig with air compressor, a mobile x-ray unit, laboratory refrigerators and oil industry spare parts and equipment.
