Humanitarian
workers to return
No interruption to oil exports from Iraq
The Secretary-General has decided
that the United Nations staff temporarily relocated from Baghdad to Amman on
18 December should return to Baghdad. They will travel to Baghdad by road on
22 December.
Authentication and certification of arrival of
humanitarian supplies resumed at the port of Umm Qasr this morning where there
are three ships and later at Al-Walid at the border with Syria. The 34
trucks waiting at Al-Walid have now been cleared. There are
about 100 trucks waiting at the Trebil border with Jordan. They are
expected to start crossing the border at 0900 local time tomorrow.
There was no interruption to the arrival of humanitarian supplies through
Zakho at the border with Turkey.
At UN Headquarters, the oil overseers report
that the export of Iraqi oil continued normally during the past week with no
change in operations at either Ceyhan or Mina al-Bakr.
During the period from 12 to 18 December there
were eleven loadings totalling 11.14 million barrels. The estimated value was
$88 million dollars. The total value of oil exported since the beginning of
Phase V on 26 November 1998 is about $172 million.
Last week, the Overseers approved 14 new
contracts for the sale of oil, three contracts were sent to the Security
Council's 661 Committee and seven are pending due to lack of supporting
documents. So far 50 contracts have been approved with a total volume of
203,300,000 barrels.
In the week to 18 December, the 661 Committee
approved 7 contracts for the import of oil spare parts or equipment worth
$2,167,367. One of the approved contracts worth $555,606 had earlier been
placed on hold. The total number of contracts approved so far is 225 for
$129,218,457.
The Office of the Iraq programme received a
further 24 contracts for oil spares and equipment worth $6,167,178. The total
number of contracts received by OIP is now 436 for a total value of
$218,277,903.
The Committee put another seven contracts on
hold worth $3,660,098. This brings the total number of contracts on hold to
127 worth $43,106,484.
During the week, there were no new contracts
received or approved under Phase III. Under Phase IV, the Office of the Iraq
Programme received a further 25 contracts for humanitarian supplies for a
total of 870 contracts received. The 661 Committee approved a further 4
contracts for a total approvals of 585 worth $1.48 billion. There are 36
contracts on hold with a value of $94.6 million.
