Oil-for-Food Background Information

 

Update for the period 19 to 25 February 2000

During the week to 25 February, Iraq exported a total of 10.2 million barrels of crude oil, in eight loadings, for an estimated revenue of $272 million dollars.   Since oil exports under phase VII began there have been 133 million barrels exported for an estimated revenue of $3283 million. 

In phase VII, the Security Council Committee has approved a total of 96 contracts for the sale of Iraqi oil with a total volume of 268.3 million barrels (159.5 m Basrah Light, 108.8 m Kirkuk).

The Office of the Iraq Programme has now received 1691 contracts for humanitarian supplies worth $3.39 billion under phase VI. Of the 1285 contracts circulated to the Security Council Committee, 876 worth $1.67 billion have been approved. So far $1.57 billion worth of contracts for humanitarian supplies have been approved under phase IV and $1.61 billion under phase V.

In phases IV, V and VI, there are a total of 579 contracts for humanitarian supplies on hold. These include 20 contracts worth $34.1 million dollars in phase IV, 160 contracts worth $504.1 million in phase V and 399 contracts worth $875.2 million in phase VI. None is currently on hold under Phase VII.

In Phases IV to VII, OIP has received a total of 2180 contracts worth $1.22 billion for the supply of oil industry spare parts and equipment.  Of these contracts, the 661 Committee has approved 1117 worth $ 569 million and put 568, worth $328.9 million, on hold.

Supplies purchased under the programme continue to arrive into the country. Arrivals over the past week included: medicines, vaccines for foot & mouth disease, spare parts for trucks, water pumps and high protein biscuits. In addition, 52,014 tones of wheat; 9,507 tones of pulses and about 11,500 tones of cooking oil arrived in the country last week.
