To commemorate its fifteenth anniversary, the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) and UNU-ONY are organizing a high-level panel discussion that will cover the roles and responsibilities of OIOS, its operational independence, and the relationship between OIOS and entities within its oversight universe.

How do we know if the United Nations is working well or not? Does evaluation provide the answers?

 

The discussion is expected to revolve around the topic of how leaders in the Organisation obtain good information to make well-informed and strategic decisions, and whether Member States and others have available to them sound analyses of how the Organisation is functioning. The panel will be moderated by Yee Woo Guo (Eddie), Director, OIOS- Inspection and Evaluation Division.

Panelists

Mrs. Inga-Britt Ahlenius, OIOS Under-Secretary-General  

Mrs. Ahlenius will speak about evaluation in the United Nations Secretariat. In particular, she will provide her perspective on the role that the OIOS Inspection and Evaluation Division plays in providing information on whether United Nations Secretariat programmes are working well or not. 

 

Ms. Saraswathi Menon, UNDP Head of Evaluation

Ms. Menon will speak about the types and sources of information available on whether UNDP works well or not and the role of UNDP’s evaluation function in this regard.

 

Mr. Collin Keating, Founding Executive Director or Security Council Report and former New Zealand diplomat

Mr. Keating will give an independent research perspective on the topic, with focus on the types of information needed to support independent assessment of the work of the United Nations.  He will also offer his perspective as a former Ambassador to the United Nations and President of the Security Council.

 

Warren Hoge, Vice President of the International Peace Institute and former United Nations Correspondent for the New York Times

Mr. Hoge will offer an independent media perspective on the topic, perhaps with a focus on the types of information needed to support those reporting on the work of the United Nations.
