The German Translation Section of the United Nations was established pursuant to General Assembly resolution 3355 (XXIX) of December 18, 1974. Since 1975, all resolutions and decisions of the General Assembly and the Security Council as well as numerous other important United Nations documents have been issued in an official German version produced by the Section.

Through its work, the German Translation Section contributes to promoting international understanding, disseminating information on the goals, functions and activities of the United Nations and facilitating the work of governmental and non-governmental institutions in German-speaking countries concerned with international issues.

The German Translation Section is part of the Documentation Division within the Department of General Assembly and Conference Management of the United Nations Secretariat. Its staff are international officials responsible only to the Organization (Art. 100, para. 1 of the Charter). Funding is assured through a trust fund financed by contributions from Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.
