Two projects are currently under implementation:Cross-border drug demand reduction
and HIV/AIDS prevention: Myanmar - Thailand
This project which has
funding support from the United Nations International
Drug Control Programme, aims at:
- developing in-country
and inter-country institutional capacity in the
areas of drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS
prevention among vulnerable groups in border
areas of Myanmar and Thailand;
- promoting the
establishment of a mechanism for cross-border
collaboration in drug demand reduction and
HIV/AIDS prevention; and
- demonstrating how
cross-border collaboration in the subject areas
of drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention
can work in the ESCAP region.
The project has three
components, namely school-based prevention,
hospital-based outreach, and public information.
National strategies for
community-based drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS
prevention
This three-year project,
with funding support from the Government of Japan,
Government of Australia and the United Nations
International Drug Control Programme, is being
implemented in five countries: Bangladesh, China, Lao
PDR, Pakistan and Viet Nam. It aims at assisting
governments in the development and implementation of
national strategies for community-based approaches to
drug demand reduction and HIV/AIDS prevention. It is
based on the results of earlier ESCAP projects. National
strategies are to be developed and implemented by the
national focal point organizations of the participating
countries with assistance from ESCAP. The project
includes activities at the regional, national and
community levels.
