This report presents the results of a regional project on
the development of integrated community-based approaches
to drug demand reduction executed by the Social
Development Division. The ESCAP secretariat developed the
project in response to numerous requests for assistance
from members and associate members interested in
developing and executing workable approaches to drug
demand reduction, following an earlier ESCAP project on
the development of programmes for drug abuse prevention.
This project was implemented in five countries of the
region, China, India, Nepal, the Philippines and Thailand
with the generous financial assistance of the Governments
of Australia and the Netherlands. This report reviews the national situation
in each of the participating countries, describes the
project activities and implementation process in each of
those countries, and reviews the effectiveness of project
implementation. It is hoped that the report will provide
guidance to the planners and implementors fo programmes
aimed at reducing drug demand.
