Development policy makers and planners in all ESCAP
member and associate member countries and areas would be
among the first to acknowledge that the enhancement of
the quality of life of the people is the basic objective
of their work. This is reflected in the fact that,
throughout the ESCAP region, the ultimate aim of
development policies, plans and programmes for poverty
alleviation, social integration and employment expansion
as well as activities in support of popular participation
and the realization of distributive justice is to improve
the quality of life of the people. This publication examines in
narrative form the quality of life currently prevailing
in the ESCAP region, with specific reference to the
developing ESCAP countries. Instead of a statistical
overview, the publication presents an analytical
assessment of the regional situation. In the process, it
identifies various quantitative and qualitative gaps in
the information required to reach a considered estimation
of the quality of life in the region. It examines related
issues in the areas of health, education, working life,
physical environment, family life, and poverty and the
quality of life.
