Introduction to the ESCAP Population Division

The ESCAP Population Division, with financial support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), conducts collaborative research; provides technical assistance including the development of human resources; organizes meetings, study tours, workshops and training courses; and disseminates a wide range of population data and information.

One of the aims of ESCAP's work is to help countries in the region to evolve adequate population and development strategies, policies and measures so that they will be able to work towards solving their own population problems.

For the purpose of national capacity-building, ESCAP has adopted various approaches for improving the technical skills and knowledge of government officials and other professionals working in the field of population. These services are provided in three ways: through cooperation with the UNFPA TSS system, including the Country Support Teams; activities funded by the United Nations regular budget; or UNFPA- and other donor-funded project activities executed by the secretariat.

Because data and information are essential for the formulation of effective population policies and the implementation of achievable programmes, ESCAP promotes new and better techniques and technologies for handling, sharing and disseminating population information among the member countries comprising the Asia-Pacific Population Information Network ( Asia-Pacific POPIN), which the ESCAP secretariat coordinates. The secretariat also publishes population information materials ranging from a data sheet and a primary journal to a monograph series, among other publications, for the benefit of the countries it serves.
