Directory of National Focal Points for the Advancement of Women in Asia and the Pacific, 1995

by United Nations, New York, 1995, 198 pages.

The first edition of the Directory of National Focal Points for the Advancement of Women in Asia and the Pacific was published by ESCAP in 1987 in order to facilitate the exchange of information, experience and expertise on women in development issues in the region, and thereby promote technical cooperation among ESCAP members and associate members. Revised editions of the Directory were published in 1989 and 1992 respectively.

The present Directory has been compiled from information collected through a survey conducted in 1994. A questionnaire was circulated to the Governments of all regional members and associate members of ESCAP. In total, information on 43 countries and areas is included in this edition.

by United Nations Population Fund, New York, 1995, 32 pages.

In keeping with the Guidelines for UNFPA Support for Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Prevention Activities, UNFPA focuses its support mainly on the following areas: (a) information, education and communication (IEC) -- including in-school and out-of-school population and family-life education, and public information and education activities on HIV/AIDS; (b) reproductive health/family planning (RH/FP) services -- including support for preventive counselling on HIV/AIDS and the widespread distribution of condoms and spermicides as part of RH/FP service programmes, and support for equipment and supplies for the protection of RH/FP personnel, including traditional birth attendants (TBAs); (c) training - including the incorporation of HIV/AIDS education and information components into all pertinent training programmes, particularly those for service providers and counsellors; and (d) research -- including socio-demographic, operational and biomedical research. The country table in section II encapsulates information on UNFPA country-level support for the aforementioned four main areas of activity. Section III of this report contains information on UNFPA-supported HIV/AIDS prevention activities at the regional and interregional levels.

The State of World Population 1995

by United Nations Population Fund, New York, 1995, 76 pages.

The empowerment of women and improvement of reproductive health and family planning services are related tasks for the world community to attain. These concepts were central to the landmark agreement reached at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo. Their importance was reiterated at the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen. Both themes were discussed further at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing held in September this year. This Year's report on The State of World Population focuses on all these related themes.

This report illustrates the value of a comprehensive approach to development. It demonstrates the urgent need for action towards achieving gender equity and equality and the empowerment of women.

Results of the Seventh United Nations Population Inquiry Among Governments

by United Nations, New York, 1995, 169 pages.

The present report provides a statistical summary of the responses of governments to the Seventh Population Inquiry. Part I contains frequency distributions for a number of variables. Part II provides a copy of the coding manual. Part III reproduces a copy of the questionnaire in order to facilitate interpretation of each variable, and part IV contains a copy of the data dictionary.

The results of the Inquiry are of great importance in the appraisal of population policies among the member states and observers of the United Nations. The data provided by the Seventh Population Inquiry are being incorporated into the World Population Monitoring, 1993 along with information from a variety of other sources contained in the Population Policy Data Bank maintained by the Population Division, such as national development plans and press clippings. In addition the Inquiry is a major contribution to the updating of the Global Review and Inventory of Population Policies (GRIPP), a computer database maintained by the Population Division and to the country population policy profiles in the publication World Population Policies.
