Population and Development Section:
- Promotes development policies aimed at bringing about a balance between population, resources and socio-economic development.
- Provides technical assistance including training and the promotion of TCDC activities to assist Governments in strengthening national capabilities in development policy and planning with respect to population ageing, spatial distribution and migration of population, the relationships between population, resources and the environment, the role of women, infant and child mortality and family planning.
- Undertakes the regional implementation of the recommendations of the Bali Declaration on Population and Sustainable Development and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.
- Promotes improved analysis and utilization of data provided by population censuses, registration systems for vital statistics, demographic sample surveys and family planning records.
- Conducts policy-oriented research on various population and development issues.
The Population Information and Communication Section:
- Helps to develop and support national population information centres that are members of the Asia-Pacific Population Information Network (Asia-Pacific POPIN) so that developing countries will be able to become more self-reliant in their information gathering, analysing, processing and disseminating capabilities.
- Provides technical assistance and specialized training to upgrade the management and technical skills of Network members.
- With funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), provides small grants to Network members to translate United Nations publications into national languages, and produce directories and databases.
- Creates and maintains population-related bibliographic databases and provides searches for users of specific data and information.
- Promotes the development and application of computerization and telecommunications among Network members for population information purposes.
- Produces a number of periodicals and specialized publications on population issues for a variety of audiences.
