ENRMD is working to strengthen the national capabilities of ESCAP members and associate members in achieving environmentally sound and sustainable development, focusing on the integration of environment and development policy and on the management of natural resources. In particular it is working to promote the recommendations contained in Agenda 21 and the Special Session of the General Assembly, held in June 1997, on the implementation of the outcome of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.

The division consists of five sections:

ENVIRONMENT:
focus is on review of the implementation of relevant international conventions at the regional level; strengthening of regional and subregional cooperation; and identification of emerging environmental issues
ENERGY RESOURCES:
focus is on energy and environment interface; electric power system management; natural gas and petroleum utilization; promotion of efficiency in energy supply and end-use; and renewable sources of energy and their commercialisation.

MINERAL RESOURCES: focus is on strengthening the formulation of environmentally sound foreign investment policies; application of geological aspects in land-use and urban planning; integrated marine policies; and assessment and development of non-living marine resources.
SPACE TECHNOLOGY APPLICATIONS:
focus is on technology applications to meet the challenges of natural resources and environmental management; natural disaster monitoring; and social applications of space technologies.

WATER RESOURCES: focus is on integrated water resources development and management; protection of water resources and prevention of water pollution; and water-related natural disaster reduction.
