In Guatemala, human rights violations, poverty and hunger increased in 2002 accompanied by political polarization because of approaching elections and indications of the remilitarization of Guatemalan society. Against this background, the UN Verification Mission in Guatemala continued to oversee compliance with peace agreements reached in 1996. The timeline for implementation of those agreements has been extended to 2004.
