A female UN police officer giving advice to a local citizenThe Division is supporting the police components of peace operations in all aspects of their work. This includes the preparation of mandate implementation plans, concept of operations as well as other policy documents, such as guidelines, directives and other issuances. Moreover, the Division maintains direct contacts with Member States with Member States on strategic policy and development issues pertaining to law enforcement matters. Direct and constant contacts are also maintained with police contributing countries in relation to developments in peace operations.

The Division also participates in the preparation of draft Secretary-Generals reports to the Security Council and the General Assembly, on police components of peace operations, on peacekeeping issues and other issues that are of relevance to the Police Division. It also analyzes and assesses the experience of the police components of peace operations, in coordination with the Peacekeeping Best Practices Section, and evaluates results achieved and lessons learned for better planning, conduct, management and support to the police components of peace operations. A particular attention within the Division is given to the selection and recruitment of the highest qualified police officers for service in peace operations. Emphasis is put on the recruitment of officers with unique and relevant skill areas such as crowd management, criminal investigation, community policing and police operations and administration that are increasingly in demand in police components. Major efforts are also made to enhance the number of qualified women in the police components of peace operations.
