UNDDR (Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration), in support of the Southern Sudan DDR Commission (SSDDRC), is currently in the process of pre-registering 25,021 Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) soldiers who will go through the DDR process. Pre-registration is taking place in 28 sites throughout Southern Sudan and the Transitional Areas (Kordofan, Abyei and Blue Nile). UNDDR is providing logistical support including air and road transport to the assembly points and technical assistance. The first phase of the DDR process is focusing on women and children associated with armed groups, disabled and the elderly. A joint team from UNDDR and SSDDRC traveled 21 km south of Abyei town to the SPLA assembly point at Agok in order to register those combatants who are slated to go through the DDR process. The team registered 127 SPLA soldiers including 14 women. 8 September 2007.
