| 1 - GENERAL GUIDANCE |
| The following information is for the guidance of United Nations photographers and field staff who wish to submit photographs for use in the Peacekeeping Photo Gallery on the United Nations website and by the UN Photo Library. Photographers should ensure that photographs they submit conform to all requirements. The mission Photographer will be responsible for verifying the completeness and accuracy of caption materials and for forwarding the digital images and captions to the Peace and Security Section, Department of Public Information, United Nations Headquarters, New York . |
| 2 - PHOTO GALLERY / PHOTO LIBRARY |
| The web-based Photo Gallery ( www.un.org/Depts/dpko/photos ) aims to provide a frequently updated record of United Nations peacekeeping in the field. Preference will be given to images reflecting the diversity of peacekeepers and to the wide range of tasks they carry out for the benefit of the local population. Photographs should aim to tell the story of the mission's mandate. DPI will also develop a photo database on peacekeeping topics, including setting up peacekeeping operations, women in peacekeeping, DDR (all stages), elections (all stages), key troop and police contributors, police training, etc. Images should be well composed and sharply focused. Keep in mind symbols of the UN in composing shots. The UN Photo Library maintains archives of United Nations activities, including peacekeeping. |
| 3 - SPECIFICATIONS |
Camera capacity: 5 megapixels or larger.
Photo size: minimum 300 dpi
File type: jpeg direct from camera (N.B. Files must not be altered or enhanced)
Fully captioned and embedded (in English) in the IPTC metadata.
Scanned photos: longest dimension 10 inches, scanned at 300 dpi, reduced to 1MB |
| 4 - CAPTIONS |
No photograph will be accepted without full captions. Captions must provide:
Name of photographer, date, location
(eg. ONUB Photo/Martine Perret. 11 May 2005, Kibuye , Burundi )
Brief location description in relation to country capital (eg. 35 km north of Kinshasa )
Brief description of activity shown
Name and title or function of main subjects
Name and nationality of UN peacekeepers
Reference to activity of any UN agency depicted, if relevant |
| 5 - USE |
| The United Nations retains copyright entitlements to all photographs submitted to the Gallery and the Library. The United Nations does not purchase images unless advance contractual arrangements have been made with the photographer concerned. Photographs posted in the Photo Gallery are freely reproducible in web and print formats. In all cases of use, the credit must be given to the United Nations. United Nations images may not be used in advertising. |
