A NOTE ON THE PEACEKEEPER AS DEMINER

Landmines threaten civilians and cause economic and social devastatation in countries recovering from conflicts.

Peacekeepers often carry out a range of mine clearance activities. These include mine surveys and mapping; establishment of databases; removal of mines; training for local deminers and national mine clearance institutions; and organization of mine awareness campaigns.

The goal of the UN mine action campaigns is to build a national capacity in mine-affected countries for the long-term task of clearing mines and rehabilitation.
