Susana Malcorra, Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Field Support

Ms. Susana Malcorra of Argentina was appointed Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Field Support (DFS) on 4 May 2008.  As the Head of DFS, which was created in 2007, she oversees daily field support operations in the areas of personnel, finance, information and communication technology, and logistics necessary to mount, direct, and sustain United Nations’ field-based peace operations world-wide.  Ms. Malcorra leads 464 staff at Headquarters in support of 33 field operations currently comprising over 100,000 military, police and civilian personnel.

She joined the United Nations Secretariat from the World Food Programme where she served as Deputy Executive Director (Administration) and subsequently served as Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operations Officer.  In this capacity she was responsible for the daily emergency and humanitarian operations in more than 80 countries, with responsibility for over 10,000 personnel deployed globally.  During her tenure at WFP, she led the initial phase of operational response to the Tsunami Emergency in December 2004 and has managed Human Resources; Budget; Finance; Information Technology; Telecommunications; Administration and Security.

Before joining WFP in 2004, she accrued 25 years experience in the private sector, including leadership roles at IBM first and Telecom Argentina where she became CEO in March 2001 and led the company’s expansion following the opening up of the telecommunications market in Argentina.  After retiring from Telecom Argentina, she co-founded Vectis Management in 2002, a company which helps large organizations in addressing change needs.

Ms. Malcorra is a founding member of the Argentine chapter of the International Women’s Forum (IWF) and a member of the Advisory Board of the Business School for the University of San Andres, Buenos Aires and that of Equidad, an NGO aimed at eliminating the digital gap among underprivileged children in Argentina.

Ms. Malcorra graduated as an Engineer in Electronics from University of Rosario in Argentina. She is married and has one son.
